How to Check Oil on Your Generac Air-Cooled Generator
  1. Unlock the Generator: Use your key to unlock the two locks, one on the right side and one on the left. Push down on the hood to release the weather gasket and lift the hood.
  2. Turn Off the Generator: Before checking the oil, turn off the main breaker and let the generator run for 5 minutes to cool down. After 5 minutes, press the red “Off” button to shut down the unit.
  3. Access the Dipstick: Remove the front cover by lifting it up. Locate the orange dipstick and pull it out. Use a rag to wipe it clean.
  4. Check Oil Level: Look for the oil level between the two holes on the dipstick. If the oil is between the holes, you’re good to go. If it’s low, you’ll need to add more oil.
  5. Add Oil if Needed: Unscrew the oil fill cap and add 10W-30 full synthetic oil, a little at a time. Be careful not to overfill! If you spill some oil, just wipe it clean with a rag. Screw the oil cap back in place and ensure it’s snug to prevent it from vibrating loose.
  6. Finish Up: Recheck the oil level using the dipstick, and make sure it’s up to the second hole. Once done, switch the generator back to “Auto” mode. After about 30 seconds, turn the main breaker back on and close the hood.

Now your generator is ready to run smoothly for the next 24 hours!

If your unit does not start after two automatic attempts, there is an issue. Make sure the gas to your generator is turned on. If the handle is lined up with the pipe, your gas is on. If your handle is lined across the pipe, this indicates that the gas is turned off. If the gas is on and your unit is still not working or is running rough, contact an authorized service dealer.
